Overview of Specialized Fields in Medical Technology

1. CARDIOVASCULAR SCIENCES

A cardiovascular science is a study of cardiovascular system, Cardiac pathologies, and cardiac diagnostics. The students are skilled in invasive and non-invasive cardiac procedures which include Exercise Tolerance Test, Cardiac Catheterization procedures (angiography and angioplasty) etc. The field of cardiovascular science offers many educational and professional job perspectives with interventional cardiologists, cardiologists, echocardiography and electrophysiology. Cardiovascular Sciences is a stimulating and rising profession. The BS MT in cardiovascular sciences program skills students with advance educational basics, specialized courses and clinical trainings.

Clinical Training:

The student of cardiovascular sciences is placed at Dr. Ziauddin Hospitals for their intensive clinical practicums rotations where they are trained under supervision of cardiac physicians and technologists. They utilize their knowledge of cardiovascular principles and functions in the operations of exercise tolerance test, cardiac catheterization, echo cardiograph, cardiac devices follow up, ambulatory B.P monitoring and ECG event/loop monitoring. The clinical practicums prepare the student to understand the various diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. These trainings start after every semester examination and the cycle continues till the final year of the undergraduate programme.

2. CARDIAC PERFUSION

Cardiac perfusion is the study of extracorporeal medical procedures during open-heart surgeries and transplantation in order to support, regulate and temporally replace the patient’s respiratory and circulatory system. The cardiac perfusionist is the core member of the open-heart surgery team. Their role is to prepare and operate Heart-Lung Machine and other complex machinery during cardiovascular surgeries, in highly stressed situation.

To perform their task, perfusionist is taught comprehensive courses to develop an in-depth knowledge of respiratory and circulatory system and how pump and oxygenator will replace the function of Heart and lungs during surgery. Cardiac perfusionist uses their expertise during cardiovascular surgeries in assisting surgeons and physicians and can also work as a teacher and researcher in research institutes. Placements of perfusionist are at Hospitals and at times they are hired by individual surgeons. Moreover, Perfusionist is appointed by industries that manufacture supplies and equipment related to perfusion.

Keeping in view the local and global needs, the College of Medical Technology initiated B.S. Medical Technology in Cardiac Perfusion – a well-balanced comprehensive program in which students are exposed to extensive learning and practice, clinical skills, academic activities and research studies.

Clinical Training:

Ziauddin University offers Cardiac Perfusionist to practice their skills at Ziauddin Hospital under the supervision of Perfusionist, Physicians and Instructors during their undergraduate studies. The degree requires completion of hands-on clinical training, during which candidates must perform a certain number and variety of clinical perfusion procedures. This experiential learning is critical to the preparation of perfusionist who must be able to respond to a wide variety of situations that may occur in the operating room. The in-house training enables the trainee to apprehend the operation of machineries used during the surgeries.

3. CLINICAL LABORATORY SCIENCES

Clinical laboratory science professionals provide laboratory services required for analysis, quality work and reporting of the patient’s samples. These Technologists or Scientists, by performing a number of tests, identify the abnormality and inform the physicians to diagnose and give quick treatment to the patients. Such Critical procedures require strong background knowledge, analytical skills and the ability to work under pressure.
The programme and courses offered at clinical laboratory sciences put great emphasis on students acquiring these skills by a combination of informative sessions, group discussion, supervised training, competency assessments and clinical practicum in order to make student skillful at performing tests, analyses, interpretations and reporting.
Clinical Laboratory Scientists can set off their careers in medical and healthcare profession. Placements are also offered at scientific equipment companies, chemical and pharmaceutical companies. They can also contribute in educational sector as a faculty member or as a researcher.

Clinical Training:

The in-house training of CLS technologists includes observation and analysis of both manual and automated testing which involves immunoassays, Electrophoresis, Blood and urine culture, Blood Grouping and Cross matching, Coagulation testing, manual and automated cell counting. The in-house training enables the Student to master the operation of tools and equipment used while performing any test. These trainings start after every semester examination and the cycles continues till the final year of the undergraduate programme.

4. DENTAL HYGIENE AND TECHNOLOGY

Dental Hygiene and technology is a multimodal course in the field of dental laboratory where dental hygiene is complemented with dental technology. It is the study of dental diseases, preventive therapy and patient’s counseling.

A dental laboratory technologist is trained craftsman who works with precision, great concentration and patience, with high standard of hand skills. As a member of dental health team, a dental laboratory technologist provides a service to dentists by constructing for them a variety of appliances to repair, replace, or reposition teeth of patients whose natural teeth are broken, missing or need repositioning. The program provides theoretical and technical training for the construction of these dental appliances

The College of Medical Technology started this program in the year 2017 with a comprehensive course plan and training of the technologists preparing them to meet the challenges of the developments in the field. This course provides students with a well-rounded education in all aspects of dental technology whilst also challenging their ability to problem-solve. A Dental Technology degree provides the best foundation for the aspiring dental technologist who may progress to work in a laboratory or be self-employed

Clinical Training:

The teaching and learning scheme at Ziauddin University provides its learner training where they can acquire the skills necessary for dental technologists.

Design and construction of complete dentures, removable partial dentures, fixed partial dentures, orthodontic appliances. Dental Technologist concentrates on area of dental technology after graduation and specializes in denture construction, metal and porcelain bridge work, or tooth repositioning appliances. A licensed or registered Dental Laboratory Technician may own and operate a dental laboratory to provide services to a dentist, a number of dentists, or a group practice of dentists

Course in specialized techniques are presented to students in laboratory, demonstration and lecture classes. Practical laboratory work is emphasized in the courses to prepare the student for employment. These trainings start after every semester examination at Dental Department of Ziauddin University Clifton and the cycle continues till the final year of the undergraduate programme.

5. NUCLEAR MEDICINE

Nuclear medicine technologists maneuver equipment that creates images of areas of a patient’s body. They prepare radioactive drugs and administer them to patients. … Most nuclear medicine technologists work in hospitals. Some work in physicians’ offices, diagnostic laboratories, or imaging clinics. They will be provided with theoretical knowledge and practical training to perform Bone scanning, Positron Emission Tomography (PET), cardiac stress tests. They can also contribute in the field of teaching and research

Clinical Training

The curriculum of BS Nuclear Medicine Technology includes basic health science education and nuclear medicine procedures, examinations and equipment. Various rotations include supervised clinical education such as general nuclear medicine imaging, cardiology imaging, radiation-sensitive cameras, dosage meters, radio pharmacy and radiation safety.
